Forest Park, Urban park in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Forest Park is a 735-acre urban green space with trails, gardens, sports fields, and an outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Connecticut River. The park also features a zoo, multiple sports courts, picnic areas, and an indoor swimming facility.
The park began in 1884 when Orick H. Greenleaf donated 65 acres to the community. Everett Hosmer Barney later added 178 acres and constructed a Victorian mansion on the grounds.
The Environmental Center for Our Schools runs hands-on nature education programs for local school children throughout the year. These programs connect young people with the environment right in their own community.
The park is well-equipped for different activities with trails for walking, a swimming area, and sports facilities for all ages. Plan to arrive by car and allow plenty of time to explore the different sections since the grounds are quite large.
From Thanksgiving through New Year's Day, the Bright Nights festival transforms the park into a glowing landscape with animated scenes inspired by Dr. Seuss stories. This seasonal display has become a cherished holiday tradition for Springfield families.
