Buôn Ma Thuột, Provincial capital in Central Highlands, Vietnam.
Buôn Ma Thuột is a provincial capital in the central highlands of Vietnam, spreading between forests and plantations. The city sits at an elevation of 536 meters and covers an area with residential neighborhoods, administrative buildings, and wide coffee plantations.
French colonial officials chose the site as the capital of Đắk Lắk Province in 1904 and developed it into the administrative center of the central highlands. Later, the city became the stage for the final offensive of the Vietnam War and witnessed key military events in 1975.
The city takes its name from an E-de village leader and sits in a region home to indigenous minority communities. Today you can see markets where vendors sell traditional textiles and fresh coffee beans, while surrounding villages maintain their languages and customs.
The city is reachable via National Road 14 from Ho Chi Minh City and connects to Đà Lạt via National Road 27. A visit is best combined with the harvest season between November and April, when the highland climate is pleasantly cool.
A world museum for coffee opened in 2018 and displays coffee production across 45 hectares in buildings inspired by traditional longhouses. The complex offers insights into cultivation methods and roasting processes, housing a collection of historical machines and tools.
