Sacred Heart Cathedral, Buôn Ma Thuột, Catholic cathedral in Buôn Ma Thuột, Vietnam.
Sacred Heart Cathedral is a Catholic cathedral in central Buôn Ma Thuột, built in a Gothic Revival style with pointed arches, a tall bell tower, and a long central nave. The facade faces a open forecourt that separates it from the street and gives the building a clear presence in the neighborhood.
The building was completed in 1958, during a period when the Catholic community in the Central Highlands was growing, partly due to the arrival of northern Vietnamese Catholics after the country's partition in 1954. In 1967, Pope Paul VI created the Diocese of Ban Mê Thuột, and the church became its cathedral.
The cathedral is the heart of Catholic life for the Central Highlands, drawing families and communities together for Sunday Mass, baptisms, and major feast days. Visitors who step inside during a service can observe the strong connection this congregation has with its faith and rituals.
The cathedral sits along Phan Chu Trinh Street in the city center and is easy to reach on foot or by motorbike. If you visit during a service, dress modestly and move quietly so as not to disturb the congregation.
Although Buôn Ma Thuột is known mostly for coffee, the diocese it anchors covers some of the most ethnically diverse territory in Vietnam, including communities from several highland minority groups. Sunday services here are sometimes conducted in local minority languages alongside Vietnamese.
