Dalat Clay Tunnel, Clay sculpture park in Da Lat, Vietnam.
Dalat Clay Tunnel is an underground sculpture park with a network of passages whose walls are covered with red and dark clay figures. The figures are handcrafted and depict people, animals, and scenes from local culture.
The project began in 2008 when local artisans transformed an unused area near Tuyen Lam Lake into an underground gallery. The work draws on natural clay deposits of the highland region and blends traditional craft techniques with modern artistic vision.
The passages display clay figures depicting scenes from daily life and regional wildlife. These handcrafted works reflect the artistic traditions that highland communities have maintained for generations.
The passages are relatively easy to walk through, but watch for low ceilings and tight turns. Bring a jacket as it stays cool underground, and wear good footwear for the stable but uneven floors.
The red and dark brown clay comes from local highland deposits and gives each figure a characteristic earthiness. Many visitors miss that the artists themselves created the tunnel structure while extracting the clay for the sculptures.
