Lo Go Xa Mat National Park, National park in Southeast Vietnam.
Lo Go Xa Mat National Park is a protected area in southeastern Vietnam, close to the Cambodian border, covering tropical forests, seasonally flooded grasslands, and permanent lakes. These different landscapes sit side by side, making the park one of the more varied natural areas in this part of the country.
The area was first protected as a nature reserve in 1986, then raised to national park status in 2002. This upgrade brought stronger protections that helped ecosystems recover after decades of damage caused by war and land use changes.
The park sits close to the Cambodian border, and the communities living nearby reflect a mix of Khmer and Vietnamese traditions that has built up over many generations. Local people have long relied on the seasonal wetlands and forests for fishing and farming, and this relationship with the land is still visible today.
The dry season, which runs roughly from December to March, offers the easiest conditions for moving through the park and spotting wildlife. During the rainy months, some trails and low-lying areas can become flooded, so planning your visit around the season makes a real difference.
The park is one of the few places in Vietnam where the banteng, a type of wild cattle, still lives in the forest. These animals are hard to spot, but their presence shows how well the land has recovered since it was first protected.
