Kon Tum

Kon Tum is a provincial city nestled in a basin landscape at 525 meters above sea level, surrounded by river valleys and the green hills of the Central Highlands. The settlement spreads across a valley floor where the Dak Bla River flows through, shaping the terrain and vegetation around it.

French missionaries established the first Christian mission between 1841 and 1850, bringing European influence to the region. This missionary presence led to the formation of an administrative structure in 1893 under Father Vialleton, formalizing colonial governance.

The name comes from the Ba Na ethnic language, where 'kon' means village and 'tum' means pool, reflecting the indigenous heritage of the region. You can see this connection still alive in how locals live alongside the natural water sources that shaped the area.

The city is best reached by overland routes that connect it to other regional centers and surrounding provinces. Plan for longer travel times when moving through the mountainous terrain, as roads wind through the highland landscape.
