The Hawf Area, Nature reserve in Al Mahrah Governorate, Yemen.
The Hawf Area is a nature reserve in Al Mahrah Governorate, Yemen, where the terrain rises from the coast up into mountain ranges cut through by deep valleys. It is one of the few green stretches in the southeast of the country, covering coastal land, hills, and highland zones within a single connected area.
The area supported human communities since ancient times, and its coast was noted by early sailors along routes connecting the Arabian Peninsula to the Horn of Africa. It was formally designated as a protected area in more recent decades, drawing attention to its natural value on a regional level.
Local people have lived here for generations, herding animals and farming small plots in rhythm with the seasons. Travelers passing through can see this way of life in the scattered homesteads and grazing grounds that line the valleys.
The reserve is remote and requires permits from local authorities before visiting, and traveling with a guide who knows the area is strongly recommended. The months from June through September bring thick mist that makes the vegetation at its most visible, though roads can be harder to navigate during that period.
The land stays green through summer not because of rain but because of thick coastal fog that rolls in from June through September, feeding the plants with moisture. This fog supports over 200 plant species, some of which are found nowhere else on the Arabian Peninsula.
