Fort Al-Ghwayzi

Fort Al-Ghwayzi stands at the northeastern entrance of Mukalla with two floors featuring circular windows and traditional stone barriers on its roof.

The fort was constructed in 1716 under the Emirate of Al-Kassad administration to protect Mukalla from raids by the Kathiri and Quaiti Sultanates.

The fortress represents Islamic military architecture through its design elements, including straw-battered bricks, palm trunk roofing, and white plastered external walls.

The structure requires extensive restoration work due to deterioration, while modern housing developments and slum buildings surround the historical site.

Located at an elevation of 27 meters, the fort maintained its defensive role even after Mukalla became the capital of the Quaiti Sultanate in 1881.
