De Vloek, Self-managed social center in Scheveningen harbor, Netherlands.
De Vloek was a self-managed center located in Scheveningen harbor featuring workspaces, concert venues, a theater space, and a vegan restaurant called Water en Brood. The building at Hellingweg 127 contained multiple rooms designed to support different activities and gatherings.
The space was occupied in 2003 and the city allowed it to operate as a cultural project for more than a decade. The site was finally evicted in September 2015, ending its run as a community hub.
The center served as a space where musicians rehearsed, artists displayed their work, and theater groups performed their pieces. Visitors could attend regular exhibitions and cultural events that were organized directly by the community.
The space was open Wednesday through Saturday and offered affordable meals to thousands of residents. The activities were accessible to visitors and the venue attracted people looking for inexpensive dining options.
The building housed a youth sailing school that taught boat handling skills alongside the artistic programs. This mix of maritime instruction and independent cultural activity was an unexpected combination for the location.
