HAUT, Residential building in Amsterdam-Oost, Netherlands
HAUT is a 21-story residential building that rises 73 meters above Amsterdam-Oost and contains 55 apartments spread across its timber frame. Large windows and broad terraces throughout offer views of the Amstel River and nearby Somerlust Park.
Amsterdam selected architecture firm Team V Architectuur in 2016 to design this project as part of a push toward greener construction methods. The development became a milestone in the Netherlands' shift toward wooden buildings and sustainable practices.
The ground floor holds a fitness center where residents gather for exercise classes, while the triangular base serves as a shared garden space that brings people together.
The building is easily accessible and offers amenities like bike storage and underground parking with charging points for electric vehicles throughout. Note that this is primarily a residential space with limited public areas, so plan visits around common areas like the ground floor facilities.
The structure locks away roughly 1800 tonnes of carbon within its wooden frame, functioning as a massive carbon store in the landscape. Solar panels integrated into the roofline and facade continuously generate electricity to power the building and feed excess energy back to the grid.
