Villa VPRO

Villa VPRO is an office building in Hilversum with undulating floors connected by ramps and steps, creating a continuous workspace of about 10,500 square meters. The interior features varying floor heights and open areas linked by winding interior courtyards, all designed as one flowing landscape rather than separate compartments.

MVRDV architects completed this first project in 1997 when VPRO moved from thirteen separate buildings into one unified headquarters. This relocation marked the end of a fragmented setup and the start of a new era in integrated workspace design.

The building represents a shift in how offices function, showing that removing barriers can bring people together in unexpected ways. You notice immediately how the flowing spaces encourage different groups to interact and work side by side.

The building is best explored on foot by following the sloped ramps and moving through the different levels. Technical systems like air conditioning and electrical wiring are hidden within the hollow floors, so you won't see exposed pipes or equipment interrupting the open spaces.

The roof is covered with grass, blending the interior with nature, while serpentine interior courtyards create hidden worlds within the structure. These winding paths surprise visitors with unexpected spaces that shift the experience of moving through an office building.
