Hof van Arkel, Medieval château in Tiel, Netherlands.
Hof van Arkel is a medieval château located on Hoogeindsestraat in the northwestern part of Tiel center, positioned near the former gate that once defended the settlement. The complex grew from several connected houses and originally served as an administrative court for regional rulers.
The site was founded in 1274 and developed into an administrative center for Brabant's rulers. Over the following centuries, its political importance faded and the building was gradually repurposed for residential and commercial uses.
The structure reflects medieval Dutch building traditions and shows the political tensions between rival powers in the region. Its design reveals how different rulers left their mark on the settlement over time.
The site is easily reached on foot from the city center in the northwestern quarter. Since it now functions as a residential community, visitors should respect its private nature and keep to external viewing areas only.
A single massive medieval tower persisted from the original structure until its demolition in 1897 during conversion into a warehouse. This loss marked the end of its recognizable medieval form and the beginning of its modern residential purpose.
