Vegaøyan

Vegaøyan is an archipelago comprising around 6,500 islands, islets, and reefs located south of the Arctic Circle in the Norwegian Sea. The islands stretch along the Helgeland coast and form a distinctive maritime landscape with scattered settlements.

Inhabitants began protecting eider ducks and harvesting their down approximately 1.500 years ago. This practice became central to the islands' economy and shaped their culture over many centuries.

The inhabitants have cultivated a long-standing relationship with eider duck care that remains visible today throughout the islands. Visitors can observe this tradition in the small protective shelters scattered across the landscape.
