Munch Museum, Modern art museum in Bjørvika, Norway.
The Munch Museum is a modern art museum in Bjørvika, Oslo, displaying more than 26,000 works across 13 floors of glass and steel, including paintings, prints and photographs. Gallery spaces spread over several levels, with each floor receiving natural light through large windows and views alternating between exhibition rooms and the fjord.
The building opened in 2021 at the waterfront, replacing the earlier site in Tøyen where the collection had been shown since 1963. The move brought the works to a larger home with more space for rotating shows and public programs.
The building takes its name from the Norwegian painter whose estate formed the collection. Visitors experience not only his work but also changing shows by living artists who explore themes of emotion and expression in ways that echo his approach.
The museum opens every day, with longer hours until 21:00 from Wednesday through Sunday. Audio guides are available in several languages through a mobile app, and lifts make the routes between floors easy to navigate.
The top floor holds a restaurant with views around Oslo's fjord and cityscape, while selected works from the collection hang on the walls. Some visitors come just for this combination of dining, outlook and art.
