Deichman library, Bjørvika, Public library in Bjørvika, Norway.
Deichman library in Bjørvika is a public library in Oslo housed in a six-story building with glass walls and open interior spaces connected by diagonal staircases. Alongside books and media collections, it also contains a cinema, workshops, and a sound studio available to all visitors.
The library traces its origins to 1785, when Carl Deichman donated his private book collection to the city of Oslo, founding what became the city's first public library. The current building in Bjørvika opened in 2020 and is the newest chapter of this institution.
The library hosts film screenings, workshops, and art installations that draw visitors of all ages throughout the day. It functions less as a reading room and more as an open meeting point where people come together to make and share things.
The building sits in the Bjørvika waterfront area and is easy to reach on foot from Oslo Central Station. All floors are connected by elevators and stairs, making it accessible for visitors with limited mobility.
Inside the building, a collection of unpublished manuscripts by contemporary authors is kept sealed until 2114 as part of the Future Library Project. Each year a new work is added, and the authors read a short passage aloud before the text is locked away.
