Akrobaten, Footbridge in Bjørvika district, Oslo, Norway
Akrobaten is a footbridge in Oslo that connects the neighborhoods of Grønland and Bjørvika by crossing above the main railway tracks. The structure spans 206 meters and is built with steel and glass, creating a light and open passage above the trains below.
Designed by architecture firm L2 Arkitekter, the bridge opened in 2011 and required 500 tonnes of steel to construct. It emerged as a solution to improve pedestrian connections between rapidly developing neighborhoods on either side of the railway.
The footbridge received the Certificate of Excellence at the European Award for Steel Bridges in 2012 for its modern steel and glass design.
The bridge measures about 6 meters in width and accommodates pedestrians comfortably alongside bicycles and strollers. Its direct route and accessible design make it a straightforward daily passage for people moving between the two neighborhoods.
The installation of this bridge required specialized night operations when railway tracks were closed, ensuring minimal disruption to train schedules.
