Sommarøy, settlement in Tromsø Municipality, Norway
Sommarøy is a small coastal settlement on an island off the coast of Tromsø in northern Norway. It sits surrounded by open sea, with traditional wooden houses along flat shorelines and wide views toward the Atlantic.
The island was first settled by fishing communities drawn to the rich waters off the northern coast. Fishing remained the foundation of daily life on the island for many generations.
Sommarøy is known for its white sand and clear water, which is unusual for northern Norway. Many visitors are surprised to find a beach that feels more like a southern coastline.
The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge, making it easy to reach by car. Summer brings long bright evenings thanks to the midnight sun, while winter offers the chance to see the northern lights.
In 2019, the village made international headlines when its residents proposed abolishing time altogether, suggesting it become the world's first time-zone-free area. The idea came from the stark contrast between the continuous daylight of summer and the continuous darkness of winter.
