Vinnufossen, Tiered waterfall in Sunndal Municipality, Norway
Vinnufossen is a tiered waterfall in Sunndal Municipality that drops through three distinct segments totaling around 845 meters of vertical descent. The longest single cascade plunges approximately 575 meters and forms the most dramatic section of the fall.
This waterfall remained largely unknown to visitors until around 2005, when systematic documentation and exploration of the site began in earnest. The late recognition has meant that word of its existence has grown gradually over time.
Local people call this waterfall simply Vinnu in everyday conversation. The dual official names reflect how geographic sites in this region are documented for different purposes.
The waterfall is visible from Road 70, approximately 5.5 kilometers east of Sunndalsøra, with a parking area near a local airstrip. Accessibility from the parking area is straightforward, making it a convenient visit without demanding hikes.
The water originates from the Vinnufonna glacier perched on Vinnufjellet mountain and flows with remarkable power down the rock face. This glacier-fed source gives the waterfall a steady and forceful character throughout the year.
