Gimsøystraumen Bridge, Cantilever road bridge in Vågan, Norway.
The Gimsøystraumen Bridge is a cantilever structure made of prestressed concrete that spans the Gimsøystraumen strait. The bridge consists of nine sections with a main span measuring about 148 meters across the water.
Construction of this bridge started in 1979 as a key infrastructure project to connect the remote Lofoten islands. It opened in 1980 and provided the first continuous road connection across the strait.
The bridge forms a vital connection in the Lofoten archipelago, enabling residents of Austvågøya and Gimsøya islands to maintain regular contact and shared traditions.
The bridge sits 30 meters (98 feet) above sea level, allowing fishing boats to pass underneath safely. Drivers use the bridge as a normal road without any special requirements or restrictions.
The bridge forms a key segment of European route E10 and connects multiple islands in the Norwegian Arctic region. It allows travelers to cross from the mainland into the heart of the Lofoten archipelago by road.
