Fetsund Booms

Fetsund Booms is a former timber sorting facility on the Glomma River where it meets Lake Øyeren, featuring wooden structures and industrial-era buildings that remain intact. The site demonstrates how logs were guided down the river, sorted by type and ownership, then directed onward.

The facility was established in 1861 and operated for more than a century as a vital hub for Norway's timber industry. It closed in 1985 as transportation methods changed and economic conditions shifted.

The site reveals how timber work shaped daily life for workers and their families, with preserved residential buildings and workshops showing their routines and living conditions. The river's role in organizing labor and community life becomes clear as you walk through the different areas.

This site is best visited during summer months when buildings are open to visitors and guided tours are available. There are walking paths around the grounds that provide good views of the river and the facility from different angles.

A large stone marker near one of the buildings records water levels of the Glomma from different decades and tells of past floods. These physical reminders show the power of nature and the dangers workers faced in this riverside location.
