Gmina Babice, Rural municipality in Chrzanów County, Poland.
Gmina Babice is a rural municipality in Chrzanów County, situated in Lesser Poland Voivodeship to the west of Kraków. It covers several villages, stretches of forest, nature reserves and a hilltop castle ruin that stands above the surrounding countryside.
Lipowiec Castle was built in the late 13th century and served for a long time as a residence and stronghold for the bishops of Kraków. It was later used as a prison for religious dissenters before falling into ruin in the 17th century.
The Nadwiślański Ethnographic Park in Wygiełzów brings together wooden buildings moved from nearby villages, including farmhouses, granaries and a chapel. Walking through it gives a clear sense of how rural life in this corner of southern Poland looked two or three centuries ago.
The municipality lies west of Kraków and is most convenient to reach by car, though local bus connections to some villages exist. Visitors planning to see both the castle and the open-air park should check their locations in advance, as they are in different parts of the area.
The Lipowiec and Bukowica nature reserves protect Carpathian beech forests where Jurassic limestone outcrops emerge from the ground in unusual shapes. These rock formations are rare in the broader region and draw geologists who come specifically to study them.
