Jerónimos Monastery, Gothic monastery in Belém, Portugal

The Jerónimos Monastery exhibits detailed stone carvings, maritime motifs, and ornate cloisters that demonstrate the Portuguese architectural craftsmanship of the 16th century.

Construction began in 1502 under architect Diogo de Boitaca using funds from taxes collected from Portuguese India trade routes and continued for nearly a century.

The monastery contains the tombs of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama and poet Luís de Camões, representing the connection between maritime exploration and artistic heritage.

The monastery receives over one million visitors annually and houses multiple exhibition spaces, including permanent collections of Portuguese history and maritime discoveries.

The monastery's architecture combines late Gothic Manueline style with Renaissance elements, featuring nautical decorations that reflect Portugal's maritime achievements.
