Roman Ruins of Estoi

The settlement started as a simple farmhouse in the first century and was transformed into a luxurious villa in the third century with additional buildings and decorative elements. This transformation shows how the inhabitants gained wealth and status over time.

The mosaics display sea creatures and fish, reflecting the artistic tastes of the Roman inhabitants who lived here. These decorations reveal how wealthy families in this region expressed their connection to the natural world around them.

The location is near Faro and accessible via local roads, with a visitor center offering information and exhibits. Wear sturdy flat shoes, as the uneven terrain includes stairs and inclines to explore.

The bath complex features an advanced brick heating system beneath the floors, revealing Roman engineering expertise in the Lusitania province. This system shows how the Romans created hot water and heated spaces long before modern technology existed.
