Alqueva, Artificial lake and dam in Alentejo, Portugal
Alqueva is a large artificial reservoir in southern Alentejo that created numerous islands and peninsulas when filled. The water body features multiple sheltered coves and connected waterways that define the landscape today.
The village of Aldeia da Luz was relocated in 2002 to make way for this major dam and water project. The construction transformed both the landscape and settlement patterns across the entire region.
Villages around the reservoir display traditional Portuguese architecture with whitewashed walls and terracotta roofs that blend into the landscape. These settlements reflect how communities have adapted to life by the water over centuries.
