Mateus Palace is a granite baroque residence with a rectangular layout, featuring a courtyard bordered by balustrades and a decorative pond positioned between the main entrance and inner space. The facade displays characteristic Portuguese baroque details including symmetrical window rows and carved stonework.
History
The building was constructed between 1739 and 1743 under architect Nicolau Nasoni's direction, replacing an earlier family residence that occupied the site from the early 1600s. The baroque structure represents an important example of Portuguese architecture from that period.

The name comes from the Mateus family who established their home in this location centuries ago. Visitors can see how the Portuguese nobility lived through the displayed furnishings, artwork, and daily objects that fill the rooms.
