Tholos do Barro, Neolithic beehive tomb in Santa Maria, Portugal
The circular burial chamber measures six meters in diameter with limestone block walls forming a domed structure rising one meter in height.
French Jesuit priest Paulo Bovier Lapierre discovered this archaeological site in 1908, leading to excavations that revealed numerous artifacts from the Chalcolithic period.
The tomb contained limestone idols, ceramic pieces, bone objects, jewelry, and metal implements that indicate advanced burial practices of prehistoric communities.
Visitors can access this National Monument near Monte da Pena, located 45 kilometers north of Lisbon in the Torres Vedras municipality.
The structure features a distinctive two-tiered design with a 9.7-meter-long complex including a chamber, passage, and antechamber with limestone block walls.
