Basket Carts of Monte, Transport attraction in Monte, Portugal

The Basket Carts of Monte are wicker seats mounted on wooden skids that carry passengers downhill at high speed. The ride travels along paved streets, taking around ten minutes to cover two kilometers from start to finish.

Residents created this transport method in 1850 to connect Monte village quickly with Funchal city below. The simple concept proved successful and remains an important part of the area's heritage.

Two cart guides in white clothes and straw hats operate each basket, using specially designed rubber-soled boots to manage speed as they descend. This work represents a living local tradition that visitors witness firsthand during the ride.

The ride is less crowded in early morning hours, and visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring a sense of adventure. The journey is relatively short, so plan to visit nearby attractions as well.

The carts reach speeds around 38 kilometers per hour without any mechanical propulsion, relying entirely on gravity and the guides' skill. The two operators steer and brake by walking backwards and using their boot soles on the street.
