Monte Palace Tropical Garden, Botanical garden in Monte, Funchal, Portugal.

The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is a botanical garden perched above Funchal that combines water features, oriental garden sections, and plants from across the world. Within the grounds sit a museum displaying sculptures and minerals, along with traditional garden areas featuring pagodas and ornamental ponds.

The site began as an 18th-century English consul's residence and later operated as a hotel before transforming into a botanical garden in 1987. This succession of uses shaped how the space was eventually developed into its current form.

The pathways display Portuguese ceramic tiles spanning five centuries, showing how this decorative craft tradition shaped the island's artistic heritage.

The garden sits at an elevation and is most easily reached by cable car from central Funchal, which goes directly to the site. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since the paths across the grounds include slopes and steps in places.

The garden holds a striking collection of more than 1000 sculptures from Zimbabwe displayed across the grounds, adding an unexpected artistic layer to the visit. Few visitors realize this art collection transforms the space beyond a simple botanical garden.
