The Monte Palace Tropical Garden encompasses 70,000 square meters of lakes, oriental gardens, and exotic plant collections from various continents.
The property changed from an English consul's residence in the 18th century to a hotel, before becoming a botanical garden in 1987.
The garden paths display Portuguese tile panels from the 15th to 20th centuries, forming one of the country's largest azulejo collections.
Visitors can reach the garden by cable car from Funchal, with daily opening hours from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM at 12.50 euros entry.
The garden museum houses 1000 Zimbabwean sculptures and 700 minerals, complemented by oriental gardens with pagodas and koi ponds.
