Sanatório dos Ferroviários, Tuberculosis sanatorium in Covilhã, Portugal
The sanatorium stands at an altitude of 950 meters in the Serra da Estrela mountains, featuring extensive windows and multiple treatment wings.
Construction of the medical facility began in 1929 under architect Cottinelli Telmo's direction, opening its doors to railway workers with tuberculosis in 1944.
The building represents Portuguese healthcare architecture from the 1920s, with its design reflecting medical theories about mountain air treatment for tuberculosis patients.
The former hospital has been transformed into a hotel, maintaining its original structure while offering modern accommodations with mountain views.
Two former employees, José and Lurdes Amorim, maintained the building's integrity by residing there after its closure as a medical facility in 1969.
