Sanatório dos Ferroviários

The Sanatório dos Ferroviários is a former hospital standing at 950 meters in the Serra da Estrela mountains, featuring large windows and multiple treatment wings. The building was designed for railway workers and now serves as a guest lodge.

Construction began in 1929 under architect Cottinelli Telmo and the facility opened in 1944 to serve railway workers with tuberculosis. The building operated as a medical center until 1969, after which its function changed.

The site reflects how mountain air was once believed to cure tuberculosis, shaping its location high in the Serra da Estrela. This medical philosophy influenced how the building was designed and positioned for patient recovery.

The site sits high in the mountains, so bring warm clothing and sturdy footwear for your visit. Access is available, but the mountain road requires careful driving, especially in poor weather.

After the medical facility closed, two former staff members lived there and kept the building in good condition. Their dedication helped preserve the property and its story for future generations.
