Brașov Fortress, Medieval fortress on Mount Strajă in Brașov, Romania.
Brașov Fortress is a stone fortification built into the rocky slopes of Mount Strajă, sitting above the old city and overlooking the rooftops below. It consists of thick walls, defensive towers, and a network of interior passages carved into the hillside.
The fortress was first built in 1524 using wood, then gradually rebuilt in stone to make it stronger. It served Brașov as a forward lookout post during a long period when the city faced repeated threats from outside.
For the people of Brașov, the fortress was not just a military structure but a visible sign that the city could defend itself. Today, visitors can walk along the stone walls and get a sense of how sentries once spent their days in this remote outpost.
A marked trail from the city center leads up to the fortress, and the climb is steep enough that sturdy footwear is a good idea. The path can get slippery in wet weather, so checking conditions before setting out helps.
The underground passages linking the towers were cut directly into the rock, allowing soldiers to move between positions without being seen during an attack. Some of these tunnels are so narrow that visitors today have to crouch to pass through them.
