Franciscan Church, Brașov

The Franciscan Church in Brașov is a Gothic stone building with pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and intricate stone carvings. The L-shaped structure is topped by a wooden bell tower and sits within the old town surrounded by historic residential buildings.

Construction began in 1401 with the church later serving as a granary during the Lutheran period. Following Austrian military backing, a major reconstruction took place in 1724 that shaped the building as it stands today.

The interior houses Baroque furnishings from the 1730s, including a three-part main altar with an oil painting of John baptizing Jesus. The decorated spaces show how the local community expressed its faith through art and craftsmanship.

The church sits in the old town on Saint John Street and is easily reached on foot. It remains open for religious services and visits, though checking hours ahead of your visit is a good idea.

The northern wall displays a fresco by artist Hans Bulhardt showing Saint Anthony with a wolf. This artistic work was created during 20th-century renovations and remains a detail that many visitors overlook.
