Banjska Monastery, Medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery near Zvečan, Kosovo

Banjska Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery near Zvečan comprising a church with marble decorations, residential quarters, and defensive towers. The entire complex reflects the medieval Raška architectural style with its fortified design.

King Stefan Milutin founded this monastery between 1313 and 1317 as his intended final resting place. His remains were later moved to Sofia in 1460.

The monastery functions as a center for Serbian Orthodox religious life, where monks observe their daily routines following traditions that have continued for centuries. Visitors can observe these practices as they move through the site.

The monastery is accessible by road from Zvečan, and guided tours are available to explain the buildings and their history. It is wise to inquire ahead since visiting hours may vary.

The original founding charter mentions an extensive medieval estate comprising 75 villages and 8 pastures that King Milutin granted to the monastery. This detail reveals the scale of wealth and power held by the institution at that time.
