Gučevo, Mountain peak in western Serbia.
Gučevo is a mountain in western Serbia, close to the border with Bosnia, rising to 779 meters at its highest point, Crni Vrh. The mountain overlooks the Drina River valley and sits near the spa town of Banja Koviljača.
During World War I, Gučevo was the site of fierce fighting between Serbian and Austro-Hungarian forces, with battles stretching over several months. The mountain changed hands more than once, leaving deep marks on the surrounding villages and the people who called this area home.
At the summit stands a memorial with an ossuary holding the remains of soldiers from both sides of the World War I battles fought here. The site draws visitors who want to understand what this mountain meant to the people who lived and died on it.
The mountain is reachable from Loznica, from where marked trails lead toward the summit. At the top there is a mountain lodge and a car camp with a restaurant, so staying for more than a day is easy.
Gučevo is home to Serbia's largest mountain lodge, which stays open throughout the year and not just during summer. This means the mountain draws walkers even in winter, when the forested slopes are covered in snow and the trails are mostly empty.
