Koviljkin grad, Roman archaeological site near Banja Koviljaca, Serbia

Koviljkin grad is an archaeological site on a hilltop near Banja Koviljaca that spreads across roughly 150 meters. The remains show foundations of several structures and ancient defensive walls still visible on the slope.

The Romans built the settlement, possibly called Gensis, on a hill above the Drina. In Roman times the river ran beneath the site, and a Roman river harbour is believed to have existed below it. The site has never been fully excavated.

The name Koviljkin grad, or Koviljka, is a local designation for the ruins above Banja Koviljača; the Roman name Gensis has been proposed but never confirmed. In the centre of the walled area, traces of different rooms can still be made out. The Drina once ran below the settlement, and a Roman river harbour is presumed there.

The site sits on a hilltop requiring some climbing to view the foundations properly from different angles. Wear sturdy shoes before visiting and check locally for current access conditions and the best route to reach the remains.
