Koviljkin grad

Koviljkin grad is an archaeological site on a hilltop near Banja Koviljaca that spreads across roughly 150 meters. The remains show foundations of several structures and ancient defensive walls still visible on the slope.

Romans established this settlement, possibly called Gensis, as a strategic stronghold overlooking the Drina River in the 2nd century. The location served as a river trading post within the Roman commercial network along the waterway.

Archaeological excavations at Koviljkin grad have revealed structural elements and artifacts that demonstrate the Roman architectural methods and settlement patterns.

The site sits on a hilltop requiring some climbing to view the foundations properly from different angles. Wear sturdy shoes before visiting and check locally for current access conditions and the best route to reach the remains.

Stone masonry work and scattered artifacts at the location reveal Roman construction methods that are rarely found in this region. These remains offer rare insight into the craftsmanship of settlements along the Drina trade route.
