Birthplace of Vuk Karadžić

The birthplace of Vuk Karadžić in Tršić is a traditional wooden structure from the 18th century with an open fireplace and period furnishings. The rooms display everyday items from that era and give a picture of how rural Serbian families lived at the time.

Vuk Stefanović Karadžić was born in this house in 1787 and went on to reshape the Serbian written language. His work standardizing the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet transformed how Serbian people could read and write.

The house reflects how language and craft were woven into rural community life. Visitors can observe everyday household items and understand how they connected to local traditions and ways of living.

The house is located in the small village of Tršić and is clearly marked as a memorial site. Visitors should check ahead about opening times before traveling, as they may vary with the season.

The house displays an original portrait of Vuk Karadžić painted by artist Pavel Đurković in 1816, hung alongside household objects from his time. This artwork captures the linguist when his reform work was just beginning to take shape.
