Velika Plana, town and municipality in Serbia
Velika Plana is a small town in Serbia situated on the bank of the Velika Morava river, featuring a mix of older stone buildings and newer residential blocks. Parks with trees and benches are scattered throughout, while traditional churches and monasteries define its character.
The town began developing in the late 1800s, shaped by farming and meat processing with several slaughterhouses and factories before World War II. After the war, these industries were taken over by the government and expanded until many closed or transformed during the 1990s.
Velika Plana hosts an annual rock festival that has drawn young music fans since 2009, bringing energy to the town during summer months. Religious monuments and regular community gatherings reflect how residents maintain traditions and find connection through local events and celebrations.
The town is easy to walk through and has good train connections to the capital as well as bus routes to nearby places. Wear comfortable shoes as parks and streets invite walking, and public transport can take you to monasteries and the river.
The name Velika Plana means 'Great Plain' and refers to the flat landscape and agricultural roots of the town. A fascinating remnant is the old brick factory at Gloža-Ciglana, which reminds visitors of industrial history, and nearby a reconstructed river village shows how farming and crafts once shaped the place.
