Akhtyrskiy, Urban settlement in Krasnodar Krai, Russia.
Akhtyrskiy is an urban settlement in Krasnodar Krai located at the border between the Kuban-Priazov plains and the Western Caucasus mountains. The town sits at approximately 38 meters above sea level, creating a transition zone between flat agricultural land and rising terrain.
The settlement was founded in 1863 as Antyrskaya stanitsa and received approximately 1,234 Cossack settlers from various regions of the Russian Empire. This founding period established it as a Cossack community in a frontier region.
The population of 20,100 residents includes a Russian majority of 90.5 percent, with Armenian and Ukrainian communities forming notable minorities.
The settlement is served by the North Caucasus railway line through Akhtyrskaya station and Leshchenko platform. These connections link it to major regional centers in the area.
After local oil reserves became depleted in the 1980s, the settlement shifted its economic focus from petroleum extraction to agriculture. This transformation made the place an example of economic adaptation in the region.
