Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is an Eastern Orthodox church built in Russian Revival style with traditional design elements, measuring 31 meters wide and constructed from red brick. The building contains two consecrated worship spaces: an upper church used for regular services and a lower church dedicated to the Holy Face of Our Saviour.

Construction of the cathedral began with a cornerstone ceremony in 1995, and President Boris Yeltsin placed soil from Moscow's cathedral at the site in 1996. This represented the beginning of Orthodox church building in a city that had lacked such structures for decades.

The lower church holds an iconostasis brought from Memel and displays memorials honoring Russian soldiers across several conflicts. These commemorations shape how visitors experience the space as a place of remembrance.

The cathedral stands near Victory Square, making it straightforward to locate using this well-known landmark. The two-level layout requires moving between different heights, so visitors should consider their ability to navigate stairs.

Kaliningrad had no Orthodox churches until 1985, making this cathedral the first purpose-built Orthodox structure in the city. The decades-long absence of such religious buildings reflects the region's distinctive past.
