Nizhny Novgorod Cableway, Urban gondola lift in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia
The Nizhny Novgorod Cableway is an urban gondola lift in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, that links both banks of the Volga between the city center and the town of Bor. The installation follows a straight line over the river and carries the cabins above residential neighborhoods, industrial zones, and open water.
Construction of the cableway began in 2010, after the French firm POMA presented the technical concept. The installation started operating in February 2012, replacing the only previous options of a distant bridge or a ferry crossing.
The name "Канатная дорога" comes from the Russian term for ropewy or cable car, and locals often refer to it simply as "the канатка". During the summer months, families ride together across the water while watching boats move below, and in winter the frozen river turns white under the passing cabins.
The ride takes about twelve minutes and offers open views of the river and both shores throughout the journey. Traveling on a sunny day or just before sunset often provides the clearest visibility.
The two steel masts reach a height of 82 meters (269 feet) and support a free span of 900 meters (2953 feet) without intermediate towers over the river. This central span is one of the longest among urban gondola installations worldwide and allows ship traffic below without restriction.
