Aviamotornaya, Railway station in Lefortovo District, Moscow, Russia.
Aviamotornaya is a metro station in Moscow's Lefortovo District, built with three vaults joined by a central hall. The hall runs the full length of the station and is lined with gold-colored pyramids and tetrahedra along its ceiling and walls.
The station opened on December 30, 1979 as part of an expansion of the Moscow Metro toward the southeastern side of the city. It was one of several new stops added during that period to bring the network closer to residential and industrial areas.
The station features metal sculptures of Icarus and constellation motifs that refer to the aviation industry long rooted in this part of the city. Visitors walking through the central hall can see these works displayed along the length of the space.
The station sits deep underground, so the escalator ride to the surface takes some time. Once inside, following the signs through the central hall helps with navigation, as the three vaults can look similar to one another.
The floor is paved with grey granite while the columns are finished in light marble, a pairing that gives the station a noticeably different feel from many others on the network. This choice of contrasting materials was a deliberate design decision made during the original construction.
