Buryat Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, Opera and ballet theater in Ulan-Ude, Russia
The Buryat Academic Opera and Ballet Theater is an opera and ballet house in Ulan-Ude whose facade and interior combine Soviet architecture with decorative elements drawn from Buryat traditions. The building has a multi-level auditorium and hosts opera, ballet, and concert performances throughout most of the year.
The theater was founded in 1939 when an existing drama house was reorganized into an opera and ballet venue. Decades later, following guest performances in Moscow, it was awarded the title of Academic Theater in 1979.
The theater stages productions inspired by Buryat legends alongside European opera and ballet, so visitors can see local storytelling traditions brought to life on stage. Costumes and stage design often draw on Buryat patterns and motifs, making them easy to notice even without prior knowledge of the region.
The building is spread across several levels that are easy to navigate, and sightlines to the stage are good from all sections of the auditorium. The main season runs from September through June, with performances scheduled on most days of the week.
During World War II, the theater's performers traveled to the Belorussian Front and gave over 60 concerts for soldiers. The director at the time, G. Tsydynzhapov, organized these trips and later became one of the most celebrated figures in the theater's history.
