Buryat Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, Opera and ballet theater in Ulan-Ude, Russia
The Buryat Academic Opera and Ballet Theater is an opera and ballet house in Ulan-Ude whose facade and interior combine Soviet architectural style with decorative elements from Buryat traditions. The building holds approximately 700 seats arranged across multiple levels and hosts regular opera, ballet, and concert performances.
The theater was founded in 1939 when a drama theater was reorganized into an opera and ballet venue. After performances in Moscow, it received the Academic Theater title in 1979.
The theater stages both classical productions and works inspired by Buryat legends, creating a space where regional and international performance traditions meet. Visitors see how local artistic heritage is woven into the repertoire alongside European opera and ballet.
The venue has a clear layout across multiple levels, making it easy to navigate with good sightlines to the stage from all sections. Performances typically run from September through June, with shows scheduled most days of the week.
During World War II, the theater's performers gave over 60 concerts for soldiers stationed at the Belorussian Front. These extraordinary wartime contributions under director G. Tsydynzhapov demonstrated how performing arts supported troops far from home.
