The Greater Church of the Ascension displays Empire style architecture with a monumental rectangular structure topped by a cylindrical drum and golden dome.
The first wooden church on this site dates from 1619, while the current stone building was constructed between 1827 and 1848 under multiple architects.
Alexander Pushkin and Natalia Goncharova celebrated their marriage ceremony in this church on February 18, 1831, during its construction phase.
The church holds regular services, maintains a Sunday school, and features a dedicated chapel to Saints Boris and Gleb within its complex.
The building underwent reconstruction in 2018, which restored its original interiors and wall paintings to their nineteenth-century appearance.
