Greater Church of the Ascension
Greater Church of the Ascension, Eastern Orthodox church in Presnensky District, Moscow, Russia
This church is an Empire-style building with a rectangular footprint crowned by a cylindrical drum and gilded dome. The interior features wall paintings and a chapel dedicated to Saints Boris and Gleb.
A wooden structure stood on this site from 1619, but the current stone building was constructed between 1827 and 1848 under several architects. The project reflects the architectural developments of that era.
This place has long served as a spiritual center for residents of the district. The golden dome remains a visible landmark in the neighborhood, and the building continues to draw people for worship and community gatherings.
Visitors will find regular services held here, and a Sunday school operates for the congregation. The golden dome is visible from outside, making it easy to orient yourself in the area.
The building underwent restoration in 2018 that returned the original interiors and wall paintings to their 19th-century state. This work revealed details that had been hidden beneath later paint layers.
