Base navale de Vilioutchinsk, пункт базирования Тихоокеанского флота России
Vilioutchinsk submarine base is a naval submarine facility on Avatcha Bay, about 25 kilometers southwest of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in Kamchatka. The site features concrete structures, long piers, cranes, and docking areas where submarines and ships wait or undergo maintenance.
The base was founded in 1937 and initially served as a surface naval station. During the Cold War, it became home to the Pacific submarine fleet and was known to American intelligence as the nest of wasps for its strategic importance.
The location reflects Soviet military traditions that continue today. The small town lives by the rhythm of naval operations, with workers and families organizing their daily routines around the needs of the submarine fleet.
The facility is not open to visitors as it remains an active military installation with restricted access. The surrounding landscape and waterfront can be viewed from designated areas outside the secure perimeter when weather permits.
A major earthquake in 2025 caused damage to a dock section at the facility. The region is seismically active, serving as a reminder that nature presents ongoing challenges even to advanced military infrastructure.
