Mutnovsky consists of four merged volcanic cones reaching 2,322 meters in height, with two main craters spanning 2 kilometers each in diameter.

The volcano experienced multiple phreatic eruptions throughout the 20th century, with notable activity in 1960, 1980, and a significant crater formation in 2000.

Scientists from global research institutions gather at Mutnovsky to study geothermal processes and monitor volcanic activities in the Kamchatka region.

Visitors need specialized off-road vehicles to reach the volcano base, which is accessible through guided tours departing from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The northeastern section contains a geothermal power plant that generates 60 megawatts of electricity using the natural heat from underground volcanic sources.
