Serafimovskoe Cemetery, Memorial cemetery in Primorsky District, Saint Petersburg, Russia
Serafimovskoe Cemetery is a large burial ground in northwestern Saint Petersburg containing graves, monuments, and a stone chapel dedicated to St. Serafim of Sarov. The grounds hold a variety of memorials spread across hills and open spaces.
The site began as a burial ground in 1905 and became a place of mass burial during the Leningrad Siege from 1941 to 1944. Over 100,000 victims were interred there, marking it as a key memorial to that period.
The cemetery serves as a place where people remember naval officers, submarine crews, Olympic athletes, and artists who left their mark on the country. Visitors come here to pay respects to those whose lives shaped important moments in Russian history.
The site is open daily and is near Staraya Derevnya metro station, which makes it easy to reach on foot. The grounds include hills and pathways, so wearing comfortable shoes helps when walking through the various sections.
A granite portico monument from 1965 displays figures of civilians and soldiers alongside verses by contemporary poets. Many visitors pass by without realizing this is one of the most important memorials dedicated to the siege.
