Kholky Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Chernyansky District, Russia.

The Holy Trinity Kholky Monastery stands by the Oskol River near the village of Kholki, in the Belgorod region. Its caves are cut into a chalk hill of the former Zhestovye Gory ridge; the monks' origin story is uncertain, but the caves are considered artificial. Above ground, a pale pinkish-white church with a round golden dome and a red-brown pitched roof rises beside white grave markers scattered among trees.

The monastery is first mentioned in 1620 as a ground-level monastery with a wooden church, later rebuilt and consecrated to the Transfiguration; its first abbot was the monk Gelasius. In 1653 Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich granted abbot Efrem a charter for a mill on the Kholok River. In 1764 the secularization manifesto abolished the cave monastery, and services continued in the surviving Pokrovsky church. The Holy Synod reopened it on 28 December 1999.

The monastery's name Tsaryov comes from the fortress town Tsarev-Alekseev, renamed Novy Oskol in 1655. Its main shrine is a Kazan icon of the Mother of God found at the bottom of a well in the Kholki area, kept in the Church of the Don Icon. The monk Iakov Timofeev published articles on the monastery's history in the Kursk diocesan gazette in 1890–1899.

The caves lie on a chalk terrace above the right bank of the Oskol, at the confluence with the Holok, near the village of Kholki, 10 km southwest of Chernyanka. The underground church reopened to visitors on 14 October, the feast of the Intercession, and services resumed there in 1995. Expect cramped, uneven passages and bring a light.

The caves are cut into a chalk hill of the small ridge once called the Zhestovye Gory. Their origin is debated: it is unknown whether monks dug them or they existed earlier, though they are considered artificial. A gallery around the altar is built like the one beneath the synthronon of the St Nicholas Basilica at Myra in Lycia.
