Saints Boris and Gleb Church in Suzdal
Saints Boris and Gleb Church in Suzdal, Eastern Orthodox church in Suzdal, Russia.
Saints Boris and Gleb Church is a stone structure with white walls and minimal ornamentation, topped by a central dome above its nearly cubic form. Prominent apses project from the main body, creating the building's distinctive silhouette.
Prince Yuri Dolgoruky commissioned this church in 1152, making it one of the first temples built in the Vladimir-Suzdal region. Its construction marked a turning point in the early spread of Christianity across this part of Russia.
The church takes its name from two brothers honored as the first saints in Russian Christianity following their early deaths. Walking through the interior, you notice how the local community continues to recognize their significance in the religious life of Suzdal.
The building stands at Borisova Street 5a in Suzdal and operates as part of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve. Visitors can explore the site year-round, though seasonal weather conditions affect the comfort of your visit.
Inside the building are preserved tombs of Boris, son of Prince Yuri Dolgoruky, and his wife Maria. These burials occupy an arkosolium, a special niche grave carved directly into the church walls.
