Cizan El-Doseriye Kalesi, Military castle in Jazan, Saudi Arabia.
Qalaat ad-Dosariya is a square castle of about 900 square metres on the summit of Jazan mountain, roughly 150 metres above sea level. Its pale tan earthen walls are reinforced by four massive towers; the photograph shows two block-like towers, one with a large dark rectangular opening and the other with a small round hole near its top.
The castle dates from the Ottoman era, when it served as the residence of the Turkish governor of Jazan. It was later used under the Idrisid state and during the reigns of King Abdulaziz and King Saud. In the Saudi era the Ministry of Defense used it, and Sheikh Abdullah al-Qar'awi made it a center for teaching and spreading knowledge.
The castle reflects traditional building methods specific to this region of Saudi Arabia, visible in how the structure was designed and constructed. Visitors can observe local architectural choices in the stonework and tower designs throughout the grounds.
Visit early in the morning when light is best and temperatures are more comfortable for walking around. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and you will climb stairs to reach the different tower levels.
The castle's name is disputed: one account derives it from "dossar", a division of an army, another from the army of the Al-Dawasir led by Amir Abdullah ibn Dir'an. The fort sits on the highest point of Jazan mountain, about 150 m above sea level, overlooking the Red Sea.
