Spillings Hoard

The Spillings Hoard is a Viking-era treasure discovered on a farm in Gotland, consisting of multiple silver deposits, bronze objects, and thousands of coins. The items were hidden beneath the floorboards and remained undisturbed for centuries before excavation.

The treasure was buried beneath a farm's floorboards during the 9th century, likely hidden by someone who never returned to retrieve it. Most of the coins originated from distant eastern regions, reflecting how far Viking trade routes extended.

The hoard shows how farming families of that era valued and stored silver coins from distant lands as treasured possessions. These objects reveal long-distance trade connections that shaped daily life and wealth on the island.
