Enholmen

Enholmen is a small island in the Baltic Sea featuring the remains of Karlsvärd Fortress with stone structures that face the water. The ruins still show the basic layout of a former military fortification today.

Construction of Karlsvärd Fortress began in 1711 and continued until 1778, but the structure was later deemed unsuitable due to design flaws. The fortification was part of Sweden's coastal defense system during the 1700s.

The island served as a quarantine station during the 1830s cholera outbreaks to protect public health in the region. This shift in purpose shows how the site adapted to meet the needs of the time.

The island is managed today by Sweden's National Property Board, which took over its care in 2015. Access to the site may be limited, so it is worth checking conditions in advance before planning a visit.

Underground facilities once housed a naval mine control center where personnel worked and lived until 2008. This hidden infrastructure reveals the site's role in Cold War maritime defense operations.
