Enholmen, Military fortress island near Slite, Sweden
Enholmen stands in the Baltic Sea as a small island featuring the remains of Karlsvärd Fortress with stone structures facing the water.
The construction of Karlsvärd Fortress began in 1711 and continued until 1778, though the structure was later condemned due to structural deficiencies.
The island transformed from a military installation to a quarantine station during the 1830s cholera outbreaks, serving the public health needs.
The National Property Board of Sweden currently manages the fortress ruins, which were transferred to their care in 2015.
Underground facilities on the island functioned as a naval mine control station where personnel both worked and lived before 2008.
